Confusing Words

 Does "bored" mean the same as "boring"? What's the difference between "funny" and "fun"? Here are some commonly confused English word pairs.

VACANCY - VACATION / HOLIDAY

vacation (US) = a holiday, especially when you are travelling away from home for pleasure
holiday is a general word in BrE and vacation in the general word in AmE
Note: we often use the plural holidays to refer to long periods off work or school.

Examples:
We’re on vacation / holiday.
Alastair is taking a vacation in June.
Most children enjoy their summer holidays.
They went to France on vacation.

vacancy = a job that no one is doing and is therefore available for someone new to do; a space or place which is available to be used

Examples:
There is a vacancy for a shop assistant on Saturdays.
William needs a holiday job. I wonder if the hotel has a vacancy / any vacancies.
Lauren wanted to book a hotel room in July but there were no vacancies.
I am sorry to hear that I am no longer being considered for the vacancy.
